Barefoot MM35's (gen1)

Graag maak ik gebruik van de mogelijkheid om een review te schrijven over de Barefoot MM35 gen1 monitors, nu ik deze zo'n half jaar in gebruik heb.

Algemene informatie en eerste indruk
De Barefoot MM35 is een actieve 3-weg mastering monitor met 1" dome tweeter, 5" midbass en dual 7" subwoofers (met in een gesloten kast die aangestuurd worden met versterkers van respectievelijk 50, 100 en 200 Watt. De kasten zijn gemaakt van gegoten metaal met fronten van geborsteld aluminium. De aansluitinggsmogelijkheden zijn een female euro connector voor de voeding en een female XLR connector voor en gebalanceerd of ongebalanceerd audiosignaal.

Opmerkelijk aan het design zijn de op de zijkant van de kast geplaatste subwoofers. De midbass geeft een relatief groot deel van het spectrum weer (tussen de 2 crossoverpunten van 100hz en 2.3KHz). Hierdoor kunnen de subwoofers op de zijkanten geplaatst worden omdat ze alleen omnidirectionele tonen hoeven weer te geven. Een voordeel dat Barefoot hiermee realiseert is dat de woofers in tegengestelde richting uitslaan en daardoor elkars krachten opheffen. Het resultaat is een resonantievrije monitor. De speaker weegt 20kg maar is met een afmeting van H 36,8 x B 24,1 x D 37,5 extreem compact in verhouding tot het totale conusoppervlak van de drivers samen.

Barefoot MM staat voor MicroMain vanuit de gedachtengang dat hun monitoren compacte mainfields zijn. Voor alle overige Barefoot modellen gaat dit zeker op maar deze 'baby Barefoot' is qua bereik en headroom beter te typeren als een midfield monitor of een zware nearfield monitor. Dit is geen main monitor.

Gebruik
De Adam Tensor Epsilon, Dynaudio BM6A mk2 en zelfs de Philips MFB 587 die ik (gehad) heb schakelen uit nadat ze x minuten geen audiosignaal ontvangen. Van deze feature maakte ik bij die speakers altijd graag gebruik. Ik liet de speakers overdag gewoon altijd aan te laten staan als ik thuis was, en als er geen muziek speelde gaan ze vanzelf in standby na x minuten. Als ik dan weer muziek aanzette gingen de speakers vanzelf weer aan. Deze functie hebben de Barefoots niet. Dat vind ik persoonlijk wel een nadeel.

Het actieve design helpt je om de hoeveelheid losse componenten te verminderen, of beperkt je om zelf te bepalen met welke versterker je je speakers wil laten aansturen. Een actief speakerdesign kan denk ik voor verschillende mensen een voor- of nadeel zijn.

Bij de MM35's zit de aan/uit switch op de achterkant in tegenstelling tot de MM27 en MM12. Persoonlijk vind ik het prettig dat ze uit het zicht zitten maar studiogebruikers zien dit als een nadeel doordat het minder praktisch is. Hierdoor haal ik dit punt graag even expliciet aan.

Verder is een zeer beperkt aantal stands is bruikbaar om ze op te plaatsen door hun relatief hoge gewicht en relatief grote diepte voor een 'compacte monitor'. De meeste statieven voor reguliere 'bookshelves' of 'monitors' zullen geen stabiele ondergrond bieden.

Klank
De MM35's klinken neutraal, gebalanceerd en detailrijk in/door het gehele spectrum en stellen je goed in staat om een oordeel te vormen over wat je erop afspeelt. De speaker zelf zit daarbij totaal niet in de weg en heeft een gemakkelijke manier van presenteren waardoor je 8 uur per dag 7 dagen per week kritisch muziek kan luisteren zonder een moment vermoeid te raken.

Het zijn speakers zonder leercurve. Als je ze een jaar lang in een ruimte zal beluisteren zul je binnen het eerste uur luisteren een beeld en oordeel vormen over de speakers die daarna in dezelfde situatie naar mijn verwachting niet of nauwelijks meer zal veranderen.

Conclusie
Van high-end monitorspeakers mag je in mijn optiek verwachten dat er van zwaktes geen sprake zijn. Dit geldt zeker ook voor de MM35's. Ze laten nergens iets liggen. Aan de andere kant is het ook maar gewoon een andere speaker en het is van smaak en omstandigheden (akoestiek) afhankelijk of de mm35 de juiste keuze is in die specifieke situatie.

Voordelen
- actief design; technische voordelen en voor sommigen mogelijk praktische voordelen (geen losse versterker meer nodig)
- natuurlijk en onvermoeiende weergave
- resolutie; is hoog en gelijkmatig door het frequentiegebied
- afmetingen; compact design
- bouwkwaliteit; metalen behuizing en volledig resonantievrij door de force-cancelling suboofers
- headroom; relatief veel conusoppervlak in compact design
- bereik; relatief groot bereik in compact design
- waarde voor je geld; ze zijn zeker niet goedkoop maar concurreren ze qua betrouwbaarheid met alle highend nearfield en midfield monitoren in de markt.

Nadelen
- actief design; voor sommige mogelijk praktische nadelen (beperkt eventuele vrijheid aangaande 'wisselen van versterkers')
- geen automatische standby na x minuten geen signaal
- aan/uit knop op de achterkant (in tegenstelling tot MM27 en MM12)
- berperkte keuze voor stands/statieven

Relativering
Deze review is geschreven op basis van mijn ervaringen in mijn eigen ruimte. Deze ruimte krijgt zeker mijn 'geschikt stikker'  maar heeft net als iedere al dan niet behandelde ruimte eigenschappen die een speaker kunnen maken of kraken. Mijn overall zeer positieve beoordeling is gebaseerd op mijn bevindingen in mijn ruimte. De waarde van zo'n review is daardoor zeer beperkt te generaliseren naar andere mensen en ruimtes. Dit geldt overigens voor alle speaker reviews, en dus zeker ook voor deze

The era of studio control rooms built around soffit- (wall) mounted main monitor speakers is virtually over. Most of us these days work in rented units, on-location or in home studio environments, using nearfield monitors that are more often than not augmented by subwoofers. So, Barefoot Sound set out to design compact nearfield speakers with the loudness, accuracy and full frequency response of traditional main monitors.
In each MicroMain 35, 350 watts of amplification power is distributed between four drive units. The seven-inch aluminium-cone dual subwoofers are side-mounted and they are locked together. Since they fire in opposing directions, the forces generated by the sub drivers cancel out (which minimises cabinet resonance) and the speakers themselves form a rigid cabinet brace. The mid/bass driver has a five-inch poly-paper cone while the one-inch tweeter is of the soft-dome variety.

No tweaks necessary
High-end monitor manufacturers seem to divide into two schools of thought. Some concede that modern studio environments are often less than perfect, so they provide extensive DIY frequency response adjustment. Others, like Barefoot Sound, believe that their responsibility doesn’t go beyond producing accurate, flat-response monitors.
Consequently, the MicroMain 35s provide very little in the way of adjustment. On the rear panel there’s an Input Level control with a 12-position switch in 2dB increments. Some bass adjustment is possible using the Sub Level control. Again, this is stepped and the settings are -6, -2, -1, 0, +1 and +2.
The most intriguing control is the Standard/Forgiving switch. Apparently this was introduced at the request of some customers wanting a more ‘hi-fi’ response. This switch “makes small changes to the mid bass/tweeter crossover, yielding a slightly recessed midrange and slightly brighter highs. Also, the bass response is altered to have less damping and steeper roll-off”. According to Barefoot, the result is “a hybrid bass character somewhere between the fast, tight, articulate sound of a sealed cabinet and the slower, fatter sound of a ported speaker. This is achieved without the negative aspects of ports such as pipe organ resonances and poor cone control below cut-off”. Their words, not ours.

Mixed benefits
Terms that immediately spring to mind on first hearing these monitors include loudness, intensity, neutrality and ultra-solid bass. We might also say that they’re revealing, but, in fact, ‘ruthless exposure’ seems more apposite. This is a mixed blessing when you’re listening to CDs because square wave mastering and excessive audio energising is revealed in all its distorted, ear-burning wretchedness. On the other hand, well-mixed and mastered tracks sound simply astonishing and the MicroMain 35s seem to disappear as the music flows out.
Listening to CDs can tell you only so much about monitors – the acid test is using them for recording, mixing and mastering. And here the MM35’s proved an absolute joy. Deficiencies and mistakes in balance that we had previously been happy with suddenly became glaringly obvious. We were also able to work very quickly because we weren’t struggling to hear details or having to guess what was really going on in the bass and treble regions. The treble has an easy, unhyped airiness and the bass will flap those flares while remaining even, tight and fast.

Forgive or forget
Although the Forgiving setting supposedly deviates no more than 0.5dB from the flat setting, the difference is certainly apparent. The bass loses a degree of weight and the overall listening experience becomes somewhat less intense. You could say that the MM35s take on more conventional speaker characteristics.
Having the opportunity to experience products of this calibre can be a mixed blessing. The downside is that once you’ve experienced the best, you’ll forever be painfully aware of the shortcomings of a mic, preamp or set of monitors that you previously considered more than adequate. It’s important to remind yourself that they still are! However, monitors like the MM35s make life easier by being brutally honest and obviating the need for guesswork – if you can afford them. The Facts:

The Barefoot Micromains are four way nearfield monitors with 350 watts of power in each speaker; the four speakers inside each cabinet: 1" soft dome tweeter, 5" mid driver, and two 7" subs. The cabinets are a little bit bulky for nearfields, measuring 14.25" tall, 15.5" deep, and 9.5" wide, weighing about 43lbs each. The frequency response is 35hz - 45khz with +/-3dB variance. There is a switch on the back to adjust the "voicing" of the speakers to a slightly more "hyped" sound, which may be easier for some to mix on. There are level controls for the master volume and separate volume control for the subs on the back, all stepped controls.

Back Story

I have owned a handful of monitors--probably 6 or 7 different pairs--in my career. I never liked to mix on bigs (ie., full range soffit mounted speakers), those have always been more "client pleasers." So, I've always preferred nearfield speakers of the 5" - 8" variety. I've mixed on a lot of the classics like NS10s and some of the new classics like Focals and Adams. I always seemed to have three of the same problems with all of these monitors -

1. Diminished sound quality at very low / very high listening levels.
2. Tubby / Unclear low end and or whispy / smeared top end.
3. Unreliable Frequency response

I was sick and tired of these issues. I would do a mix, and it would sound incredible, and I give it to the clients, and they'd say "yeah sounds great but...the low end is pretty weak" or "yeah sounds great but...the top end is really harsh on my headphones..." I would listen back and think to myself, what are you talking about? Am I crazy or does this sound fine? I would then take the mix to my car or to headphones to find out that they were in fact completely right about my mix.

NEVER should a monitoring system lead you to make these kinds of mistakes. That's something we do not have the time to do. Time is money, and time is priceless, and spending an extra two hours fixing you mix mistakes is NOT something I want to do. I also don't want to spend five years learning a pair of speakers - I want them to be flat, versatile, and lead to great translation.

My Speakers

After long debate, I finally pulled the trigger on these speakers. They are very large for nearfields, and the key factor here is weight, because you will need stands for these. Factor in another $700 for a good set of speaker stands that will hold these guys. When I first put these guys to work, I just listened to some of my reference recordings - stuff that I know and love - and I was surprised how my "knowing" and "loving" turned into "what?" and "wait a minute!" Songs that I thought sounded great suddenly sounded much better, or much worse than I thought. These monitors are so revealing, it's incredible. You can hear details you've never heard in music before. You can hear overcompression easily, and you can hear dynamics beautifully.

Issues

When I first started mixing on these, I took a mix to my car and exclaimed "No!" because my mix had so much bass. Granted, this is not simply a monitor factor, it's the room, the positioning, the treatments, everything. So, I learned very quickly that these speakers have a lot more low end detail than you're probably used to hearing - which is a good thing - but it can become addicting to keep adding more! It sounds so clear and good!

Within about 6 months, I was very used to these speakers, which is much less time than I expected. With other speakers, it seems like it took me a year or two to really dial in to how they sound. These speakers are non-fatiguing, easy to learn, razor flat, and are just a joy to work with.

Trust

I MUST be able to trust my monitors. They are there for me while tracking, while mixing, while editing, etc. I cannot have speakers that lie to me. I need to be able to work quickly, make good judgements, and make them fast. With these Barefoots, I can do that. They have saved me so much time and energy with mixing and tracking - I know that the sound I hear coming through the speakers is the sound I am getting.

Summary

The good:

Amazing sound quality, tightness, and clarity
Loud and clear
Great build quality
Easy on the ears
Detailed at all volumes
Works well for any genres

The Bad:

Expensive
Heavy/hard to move (no handles like the higher models)


The Ugly:

They need stands, which adds another $500+ to your price.
Imaging could be a little better - fairly narrow sweet spot.


Aside from the bad and the ugly, I still completely reccomend these speakers. I have owned them for just over a year now, and I cannot imagine going back to anything of lesser quality. These have saved me time and frustration, and every client that walks in says "wow those sound amazing." That's good enough for me!
